Joe Fafard: 1942 - 2019

Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard died Saturday at his farm in Lumsden.  He was 76 years old.  He was born less than 300 kilometres east of there, in the farming community of Ste Marthe.  He studied art at the University of Manitoba and Penn State.  And for more than half a century he has been making art, mostly sculpture, at his foundry in Lumsden.

We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the foundry last November.  Here's a link to that piece.  Thanks Joe.

  1. Vancouver here. Yesterday I walked in the sunshine to the corner of 7th and Granville, to Joe Fafard's sculpture standing outside Heffel Fine Art Auction House; Emily Carr and friends. Emily with her sketchbook under her left arm, pencil in the right hand, horse with monkey atop, and dog underneath. I put my hand on Emily's shoulder and said my goodbye through her to Joe Fafard. Sometimes we feel who we count as friends in this world, even though we'll never meet.
Thank you for the fine tribute to Joe Fafard.
I'll walk again to see Emily and friends, but I especially love to see her on those wet days when everybody and everything is rushing past. There she stands, in her silent power, speaking eloquently as the rain comes down.
So much to be thankful for, these two amazing creators.
